Character

The character is defined, initially as “a symbol or sign that gets printed, painted or sculpted over something (a material)”. From here, many definitions converge: “a writing or printed sign”, “the style or form” of these signs. It is worth mentioning that a character is also a “symbol or a magical figure”, as that of the “different marks from the hot iron on the skin of herd animals, we are able to distinguish each one from the other”.

The different type of signs that cover the broad spectrum of the word character, suggest that the limit between a character and a letter is very subtle. Every letter (linked to an alphabetic system) is a character but cannot determine the opposite.
